Unlocking Stillness
A Collateral Event for the India Art Fair, 2017
In Unlocking Stillness opening January 14, 2017 at Gallery Art Motif, Kiyomi Talaulicar continues on an artistic trajectory that is inimitably her own. Her new paintings evoke the seen and unseen action of time on surface and interior. Taking the walls and other objects she so closely observes as her starting point, she builds her works up layer by layer, and then scrapes and sands them to amplify the surface with subtleties of volume, texture, and tone. The largest paintings envelop viewers with the scope of her vision. She walks the tightrope of balancing artistic and humanistic concerns. Happily for us, Unlocking Stillness reaches beyond the other side.

Kiyomi Talaulicar's artistic oeuvres open up her quest in the field of languages that convey inner calm amidst all the turbulence one observes around. In her recent suite ‘Unlocking Stillness’ her painterly lines marking fissures on walls, convey a strong syntax for human memory and a search for a home within. ‘Unlocking Stillness’ is a series on Walls, as Beings.
Human surrender to a Wall, be it an architectural element or artistic endeavour, manifests a vortex a human energy it beholds. It is deep yet simple, of bodily surrender and yet filled with sensuousness, and of the mundane yet ethereal presence. Kiyomi’s work process is introspective and layered with a keen eye for ‘language as desire’ that fulfils the human mind.
Her process of self reflection fuels her meditations of what is within and without a wall, imposing a Wall as a signified Being.
